A survey among 64 museums and historical sites across Malta and Gozo revealed that they had a total of 2.2 million admissions last year, up by 9.9 per cent over 2012.
 
The NSO said that in 2013, the number of active museums and historical sites in Malta and Gozo stood at 64, two more than the previous year. Four of these were partially active throughout 2012 and 2013.

More than half the sites were owned by the state, while the remainder were either owned by the Church or by private organisations.

Art museums and monuments  had the highest proportion of
admissions, with 31.0 per cent of total admissions each. Archaeology and history museums followed with 24.7 per cent.

Income from admissions generated by museums and historical sites in 2013 reached €9.4 million - an average of €146,483 per site. This resulted in an increase of 9.5 per cent in income from admissions compared to the 2012 levels,
