On November 26, 1999, a one-day seminar was organised on the International Year of Aging at St Lawrence Leisure Resort in Gozo.

At the beginning of this seminar the organisers informed us that the interventions were to be recorded so that the feedback would be analysed and followed later.

One of my interventions was regarding the need for a rehabilitation suite at the Gozo General Hospital. It needs to be done to cater for eight to 10 patients. I explained my idea. I was informed that rehabilitation is already carried out in the wards and that it needed money.

I replied that before the opening of the Coronary Care Unit, patients suffering from heart problems used to be treated in the general wards but nowadays these patients are treated at the CCU.

I pointed out that, since there might be other priorities, the rehabilitation suite should be planned so that it could be become a reality perhaps in five or 10 years’ time. This service was already offered in Malta.

It is to be noted that this one-day seminar was organised 15 years ago and Gozo General Hospital is still without this important facility.

The sister island of Gozo should also be provided with a care level to that offered in Malta.
