Whenever I have visited this island I have always experienced the greatest kindness of its people and, indeed, of members of the government as well.

A few weeks ago, my sister, Flora, suffered a broken hip during a holiday on Malta and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital.

She received efficient and kindly care, which included successful surgery to the broken hip and ongoing care until she could be transferred back to the UK.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the identities of the anaesthetists, surgeons, doctors, physiotherapists or nurses who treated her so well but I would like to use the opportunity of this letter to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of them, not just for the efficiency with which they treated her but also for their kindness to her.

I believe that if this accident had to happen to my sister, there could be no better place abroad than Malta to find oneself suddenly and desperately in need of help.

Review within my profession of medicine also confirmed the outstanding professional reputation of Malta’s hospital.

May I wish all readers, and specially the staff of Mater Dei, a joyful festive season and every success in the years ahead.
