There's something really exciting and fun about making your own traditions over the holidays. Making new traditions doesn't mean forgetting your old ones with your families. There is no reason why a new couple can’t enjoy spending those special days with their loved ones, but why not also start some new traditions of your own? Ones which you can enjoy for years to come and maybe also pass on to your children?

New traditions don't need to be expensive, or even take lots of careful planning. It should be something meaningful to you and your partner – something you will both enjoy, and that represents who you are together.

Here are a few ideas.

1. Make a Christmas album
No, I don't mean a music album. Every year take a few special Christmas snapshots around the house, or even outdoors. Wear special Santa hats, take pictures as you shop around for presents, or while you're opening them – have fun with it. Buy or make a photo album, and each year add your new photos. It will be a great memento for when you're older.

2. Exchange gifts in private
Gift-giving (and receiving) with the whole family is always fun, but try keeping the point in time when you open each other's presents something between just the two of you. It can make that moment so much more special.

3. Volunteer
This is obviously something you can do all year long, but the holidays are always a super busy time, and extra help is appreciated. Find a cause that is close to both your hearts, be it helping the sick or elderly, education, working with youths, helping out at a local animal shelter, or anything else you might think of. There is plenty of information online for volunteer work, so get browsing, and bring a little happiness to someone else this year.

4. Go on a date to the Panto
Going to watch a pantomime is a fun way to spend an evening, and this year (like every year), there are some amazing productions in the works. Pantomimes are a great place to spend some quality time with your significant other. Just sit down, relax, and let yourself be entertained.

5. Make new year resolutions together
Maybe you have both wanted to try ballroom dancing, a gym class, martial arts, or an art class, but just never quite got round to trying. Or maybe you both smoke, and it's time to quit. Every year, come up with one new year resolution for you two to do together, and stick to it. It's always easier to keep resolutions when you have someone to keep you accountable. Do this every year, and come up with new, fun things for the two of you to try.
