Does planting billboards in streets and squares surrounded by residences have anything to do with the environment? It think it has.

The billboard industry is becoming a scourge but people do not know what to do about it, or perhaps they don’t care.

I detested all those billboards near the GWU monument in Msida. Just a week ago, two trucks and three or four workmen started to assemble one (reproduced above) in the vicinity of my house just a few metres away from the Mosta war victims’ memorial.

Who is in charge here? Is it the Environment Minister, if we have one? Mepa, the local council? Or is it a free-for-all, using the Armier system.

Is it possible that our local council or Mepa gave its blessing to this big metal plate called a billboard? Is there a permit for it?.

Is the council happy with it? If not, what is it doing about it?

Taking care of the environment is not just about preventing litter but also about protecting what is pleasing to the eye.

The billboard advertises a new soft drink. The only avenue I have is to boycott all products made by this company, until this scourge is seriously regulated by the authorities for the benefit of residents and the environment.
