Some 60 children with mixed abilities from the San Miguel primary education resource centre, Pembroke, and Marsascala primary school participated in three percussion workshops entitled Shake, Rattle and Roll.

The workshops, held at the resource centre, were led by Tribali’s Peter Paul Galea, and organised by the Valletta 2018 Foundation as part of the Żigużajg festival for children and young people held at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta.

The children were led through the steps of drumming, beating and shaking to learn the basics of rhythm and beat. They responded well to the sounds and found the sessions fun and relaxing.

Music is proven to promote wellness among children with mixed abilities, especially children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.

It improves their social behaviour and increases their ability to focus, pay attention and communicate and is also known to improve body awareness and coordination.
