President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca presented green flags, silver and bronze award certificates to 78 students involved in Ekoskola committees in 39 schools for their achievement in education for sustainable development.

The Eco Schools programme is one of the largest international programmes focusing on education for sustainable development with over 14 million students worldwide actively participating in it.

Nature Trust executive president and Foundation for Environmental Education Malta representative Vincent Attard said the programme was introduction in Malta in 2002 as Ekoskola and today over 44,482 students from 110 local schools are taking part.

Attard said the programme helps students focus on various issues related to their environment, such as community needs, senior citizens, family, biodiversity, water and people with special needs. He added the programme has shown that when given the opportunity, students can think outside the box and bring about a mentality change.

The President thanked Nature Trust and the schools involved for providing local students with the opportunity to participate in the programme and invited other schools to join. She said the programme’s methodology of empowering Maltese citizens to be agents of change irrespective of their social realities is very much in line with her presidency’s policy.
