The first picture dictionary in Maltese featuring an extensive list of words and pictures totally localised and firmly planted in the Maltese reality, culture and environment has been released by Merlin Publishers. Stampa-kelma, the result of years of research and planning, is written and illustrated by Trevor Żahra.

The publishers said Stampa-kelma is unique in its genre with over 1,000 words and pictures, all grouped thematically such as the human body, family and clothing,.

The dictionary includes words and pictures that name locally-found birds, animals, fish, flora, herbs, trees, fruit and vegetables, as well as sections on Maltese traditions and folklore.

The dictionary also has an alphabetical index in Maltese-to-English and English-to-Maltese, and a section with brief background information on a number of topics covered in the book.

Stampakelma is divided into two sections: one for younger children, the other for older ones.

Both everyday words from children’s realities as well as other less common words are covered.

Localisation to the country where it is being used is crucial to a picture dictionary and Żahra has taken great care to ensure Stampakelma is full of words relating to the Maltese environment, culture and traditions.

To quote one example, one can find words used in traditional festi, words relating to Malta, the publishers said.
