The metropolitan city of Geelong in Australia this year has welcomed Christmas with a bang. On the 22nd of November they lit up a floating Christmas tree in Corio Bay.

The 25 metre-high steel structure cost the city $990,000. The tree cost $350,000 to construct and the rest of the money will go towards the dismantling, storage and then re-erecting over a period of 4 years.

More than 15,000 people were at the Geelong waterfront to witness the switching on of the Christmas tree. When lit up, the tree does look fantastic and this video, shot by Christian Messer, who shot this video via drone.

Many say the tree’s price tag is now not relevant as the media coverage it generated for the city far outweigh the cost. What do you think? Was it money well spent or just a waste of funds which could have been better invested somewhere else?
