An Italian man marching in support of Palestinians in the northern West Bank has been shot and seriously wounded by Israeli forces, hospital officials said.

Patrick Corsi, 30, was shot during a peaceful protest in the village of Kufr Qadom, near Nablus, according to Ramallah Hospital director Ahmad Bitawi. He described Mr Corsi's condition as stable.

Village resident Khaldon Ishtawi said Israeli soldiers opened fire on about 400 protesters from 40 metres and shot Mr Corsi in the chest. He said the soldiers fired without provocation.

The Israeli military said it is investigating the incident.
