A collection of wax crib figures and saint statues are among the 1,000 lots of collectible items going under the hammer at the Belgravia Auction Gallery, St Julian’s, next month.

Two Malta views from the latter part of the 18th century, attributed to Alberto Pullicino, show Valletta and the harbours to its north and south while galleys of the Order idle offshore. Its companion piece is a view across the harbour towards St Angelo and the Three Cities.

An unrestored Girolamo Gianni showing the same view across from Valletta shows little change 100 years later. While such topographic works occasionally do turn up at auction, they remain highly prized among local collectors.

A Maltese clock with its original works is another highly collectable piece that carries an estimate of €4,600-€6,000.

A DeRohan period small chest of drawers, beautifully veneered in olivewood in parquetry pattern is a fine example of fine Maltese Grand Master period furniture. It stands aside a Pinto period chest also in olivewood with fret lace pattern inlay.

Old Master paintings by Mattia Preti, Stefano Erardi and Antoine Favray hang alongside Maltese works of art by Giuseppe Calì, Emvin Cremona, Willie Apap, Michele Bellanti, Giorgio Preca and Pietro Gagliardi. Majolica, a Venetian candelabrum circa 1800, wrist watches, jewellery and Maltese flatware are also on sale.

Viewing is open this weekend. The catalogue can be seen at www.belgravia-auctions.com.
