Barely a couple of decades ago, the people of Malta marked the solemnity of Christ the King by thronging the granaries, in Floriana to pay heed to shepherds of integrity preaching the Word of Our Lord.

This year, throngs of people, from all parts of Malta and all walks of life, joyfully marked the same solemnity by taking part in a fun run to honour the Word of the Good Shepherd as expressed in the Gospel of the very same day: “I was hungry. And you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty. And you gave me something to drink” (Matthew 25:35).

Civil religion, with the rallying cry of ‘one nation one heartbeat’, forged the people of our islands into one community bent on the noble goal of works of charity. What joy to see that Malta, despite the radical transformation of recent years, is still unflinchingly Christian at its very core.
