Whelan: Dave Whelan, owner of Championship side Wigan Athletic, has been charged by the FA for insulting Jewish and Chinese people in a newspaper interview. “It is alleged the Wigan Athletic chairman breached FA Rule E3 in that his comments were abusive and/or insulting and/or constitute improper conduct and/or bring the game into disrepute,” the FA said. Whelan had until Dec. 5 to respond to the charge.

Vermaelen: Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is to undergo thigh surgery that could rule him out for the remainder of the season. The Belgian has yet to feature for the Catalan giants since his switch from Arsenal in the summer and could see his entire first season at the Nou Camp washed out. The 29-year-old will go under the knife on Tuesday in an attempt to cure the problem.

In Brazil: Riot police charged onto the pitch as players scuffled in the closing minutes of the Brazilian Cup final on Wednesday but the match was able to continue and Atletico Mineiro took the title with a 1-0 win over city rivals Cruzeiro. Police with shields and helmets were called onto the field with five minutes left when it looked like a full-scale brawl might develop, but tempers quickly calmed after Atletico’s Leandro Donizete was sent off for a needless foul.

Pele: Brazilian great Pele, who is in a Sao Paulo hospital for treatment for a urinary tract infection, has been moved to a hospital wing where he won’t be besieged by as many visitors, his spokesman said. The Albert Einstein Hospital said Pele, 74, had been moved to a special care unit after suffering “clinical instability”. The hospital did not provide details.

Bastia: Bastia have appointed Ghislain Printant as head coach until the end of the season. The 53-year-old made the step up from reserve team boss to interim manager after Claude Makalele was sacked earlier this month and will now remain in charge until the end of the campaign.
