The 2014-15 Malta Volleyball Association (MVA) season got underway with the women’s Super Cup contested recently by Fleur de Lys and Playvolley at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

With FDL fielding a practically unchanged line-up from last season’s league and cup winning team, it was left up to Playvolley to try and stop their opponents from starting the new campaign in the same trend they had ended the previous one.

While Playvolley produced some stiff resistance, it was always going to be hard for them with four regulars missing.

In the end, Fleur de Lys emerged victorious with a solid 3-0 win (25-13, 25-16, 25-7), signalling their bold intentions of taking their title defence very seriously.

FDL started strongly and thanks to the effective service of Sarah Elgasi they opened an early 5-0 lead.

Playvolley took some time to settle down. Their attack wasn’t functioning as it should but good defending allowed them to keep the pace up to the second technical time-out at 16-8.

After that, however, Fleur de Lys came back on court determined to close the set and they did it in convincing fashion – 25-13.

The second set saw Playvolley reacting strongly with excellent defending from D. Caruana and L. Soler which frustrated the FDL attack.

With the first technical time-out coming with the two teams separated by a single point, the game became a test of nerves with longer rallies.

At the second technical time-out, and with the score at 16-13, FDL stepped up their game. I. Cutajar and F. Sarcina came to the fore and FDL closed the set with a comfortable 25-16 scoreline.

The third set saw FDL racing to a 16-0 lead. Playvolley tried hard to limit the damage but FDL did not relent and they wrapped up the set 25-7.

The winners received their trophy from MVA president Branko Vlahovic.
