The popular ‘Danish Village’ complex in Mellieħa plans to add 150 small holiday homes.

A project description report submitted to the planning authority proposes 30 new bungalow units: 25 will be built along the northern edge of the resort and five along the south periphery.

The property, officially called the Mellieħa Holiday Centre, has a total area of more than 260,000 square metres, including 100,000 square metres occupied by the hotel and its grounds.

The resort buildings have a footprint of about 17,000 square metres.

Described as “unique”, the low-density tourist complex is located a couple of hundred metres away from the beach and was designed by Danish architect Hans Munk Hansen. It opened in 1979 and consists of 150 self-contained holiday homes located within “very richly landscaped grounds”.

The bungalows are built in local stone with a footprint of 70 square metres and include two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and an enclosed courtyard.

Owned by Danish travel company FolkeFerie.dk the great majority of guests are from Denmark.

The design of the proposed bungalows will replicate that of the existing ones as per the original plans of the architect. The new structures will also have a small splash pool in the courtyard.

The project description report said there was an increase in bookings during the summer season and the shoulder months in recent years, which prompted the management to explore ideas on how to upgrade and extend the hotel.

The Mellieħa Holiday Centre was recently embellished with an indoor pool and spa.

All the utility services are already available on site and no additional parking is listed as part of the extension because the resort offers ample on site parking for residents and visitors, according to the report.

The works are expected to take one year.
