A newly graduated Ph.D. student has called on the university to cut down on red tape and continue striving to remain competitive.

The university should “take stock of unnecessary bureaucratic exercises hampering progress and dampening the enthusiasm of valid contributors,” Noel Buttigieg said yesterday in a graduation ceremony at Valletta’s Jesuit Church.

Similarly, some members of the academic staff also had to embrace change and “pull down their ivory towers”.

Dr Buttigieg challenged universities to act as the forerunners in teaching and research innovation. On an international level, the University of Malta had to remain competitive, broadening the scope of the courses offered, while furthering opportunities for both academic staff and students.

Dr Buttigieg pointed out that dynamic student and faculty exchange programmes had become “an interesting characteristic” of Malta’s 400-year-old university. He encouraged faculties, institutes and centres to continue pursuing such opportunities.

However, he did admit that these programmes came at a cost and therefore the university required support from the authorities.

Lecturer George Vital Zammit also addressed the students.
