Caffe Moak Luxol are the only unbeaten team in the women’s basketball league following the weekend programme during which they chalked up a second successive win after beating Honey Athleta 62-54.

Amelia Simmons had another fine match for Athleta with 34 points as Sammy Jo Barbara and Leannaka Cassar were the only other players for Athleta to contribute with baskets.

Playmaker Sarah Pace was Luxol’s best scorer with 19 points.

Athleta had the better start but the champions hit back strongly in the second quarter and a 15-2 break saw them 25-21 ahead before changing ends 31-27 in front.

Eight consecutive points at the end of the third quarter pulled Athleta level at 41-all but Luxol left their best to the last quarter during which they opened a seven-point lead which Athleta were not able to wipe out as the champions held on for their victory.

As expected, PAVI Depiro, though having the influential Sam Brincat missing, were still superior to bottom-placed Phoenix.

Depiro never gave their opponents a chance to settle down and by half-time they were leading 39-12. Phoenix did lift their game after the interval but Depiro still ran out easy winners – 84-36.

Standings: Depiro 5 (2-1), Luxol 4 (2-0), Athleta 4 (1-2), Hibs 3 (1-1), Phoenix 2 (0-2).

Top scorers: A. Simmons (Athleta) 80, S. Evans (Depiro) 53, L. Alston (Luxol) 37, S. Brincat (Depiro) 33, S. Grima (Hibs) 32.
