The police and Enemalta officials have descended on Armier and St Thomas Bay, where they are cutting off the electricity supply to rooms found to be supplying other rooms illegally. The supply was also disconnected where other abuses were detected.

Services to some 20 boathouses were cut off early in the operation.

The raid follows a controversy over recent weeks after the government said it would provide smart meters to boathouses, even those which previously did not have electricity.

The prime minister had said the measure was intended to deter the theft of electricity and did not imply title to the land.

The deadline for applications for the smart meters closed last week.
