Newcomers Cynergi Virtus kept their nerves in check to win their maiden trophy after overcoming A to Z Electronics Athleta 74-70 in the final of the St James Hospital Shield yesterday. Virtus were off to a flying start to lead 50-33 at half-time. Athleta raised their game in the third period to narrow the gap to just four points going into the final quarter. The last 10 minutes were tense but former Athleta player David Bugeja nailed two free-throws in the dying seconds to secure Virtus’s win at the expense of the MBA Shield holders. Virtus pivot Evan Bruinsma topped the scoring with 31 points while Chad Patus led the way for Athleta with 23 points.
