Naxxar midfielder Gilmar earned his team a dramatic point when he scored a spectacular equaliser secure a 1-1 draw against Qormi at the National Stadium.
The match was evenly balanced for much of the first half with Qormi creating the better chances late in the first half with Frank Temile’s dipping header was pushed over th e bar by Naxxar goalkeeper Azzopardi.
A minute from the break Alfred Effiong’s stinging drive was pushed away by Azzopardi.
Qormi’s pressure yielded an opener three minutes into the second half when Albert Bruce’s throughball released Duncan Pisani who kept his cool to slot the ball past Azzopardi.
Qormi almost doubled their lead on 55 minutes when Pisani broke clear on the right before sending a dipping cross that was deflected into the path of the unmarked Temile whose attempted overhead kick finished wide.
Qormi remained on top and on 57 minutes Joseph Chetcuti picked Mazzetti in the area and his downward header was pushed away by Azzopardi.
Naxxar looked down and out but in the first minute of stoppage time Gilmar picked up a short clearance and unleashed a powerful volley that gave no chance to Matthew Farrugia, the Qormi goalkeeper.
Qormi winger Duncan Pisani was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
