Stephen Smith, the 30-year-old Briton who was being held by the police following an incident on Wednesday in which the Home Affairs Minister’s driver fired three shots at his car, has been released from police custody.

Called by Times of Malta at his home this morning, Mr Smith’s father said his son was asleep and did not want to speak to the media.

It is not yet clear whether the police will press criminal charges against him.

The man who shot at Mr Smith, PC Paul Sheenan, has been suspended from all duties.

A magisterial inquiry is underway.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning said he will not take action against the minister until the inquiry is concluded.
