Xewkija Tigers and Kerċem Ajax booked their place in the quarter-finals of the GFA Cup following victories over fellow Division One sides St Lawrence Spurs and SK Victoria Wanderers respectively, last weekend.

The Spurs produced a decent challenge in the opening half but fell apart after the break as they suffered a 6-2 defeat.

Xewkija’s goals were scored by Daniel Bogdanovic (13, 87), Dene Shields (45, 50) and Chris Camilleri (56, 79).

At one stage, St Lawrence had reduced the gap to two goals following a Mambaye Boye penalty (58) and a William Barbosa strike (78). However, the Tigers hit back to extend their winning margin.

Anderson Ribeiro was twice on target in the second half as Kerċem beat SK Victoria Wanderers 2-0.

In other ties, Victoria Hotspurs chalked up an impressive 15-0 win over a hapless Żebbuġ Rovers team with Serbian striker Nikola Vasilic scoring eight goals.

Ferdinando Apap (2), Michael Bezzina (2), Oliver Curmi, Rodney Buttigieg and Daniel Farrugia were the other scorers for the Hotspurs.

Sannat Lions also knocked out a team from the lower category, Xagħra United, to progress in the competition.

Sannat won 2-0 thanks to two late goals from Fernando De Andrade, the first from a penalty.

In a clash between Division Two teams, Għajnsielem beat Qala Saints 4-2 with Charlon Tabone scoring a hat-trick for the winners.

Għarb Rangers also reached the last eight of the GFA Cup thanks to a 3-1 win over Munxar Falcons in another all-Division Two tie.

Rangers were already 3-0 up at half-time after goals from Josef Portelli, Frank Attard and Stephen Apap.

Munxar’s consolation goal was scored by Stefan Farrugia after the break.

Holders Nadur Youngsters and beaten finalists Oratory Youths will join the competition in the quarter-finals.

Monthly awards

Nadur Youngsters midfielder Charles Mercieca and Xewkija Tigers forward John Camilleri are the winners of the BOV GFA player of the month award for September and October respectively.

Mercieca was prominent in the GFA Division One Knock-Out competition, scoring Nadur’s winner against Kerċem Ajax in the semi-final. He was also on target in Nadur’s 2-1 victory over Oratory Youths in the final.

For his part, Camilleri underlined his scoring prowess with a brace in Xewkija’s 6-2 win over Oratory Youths and also netted the only goal in the 1-1 draw against Kerċem Ajax.
