Two young men were this afternoon charged with stealing several items, including jewellery from a house belonging to an elderly woman.

The youths, one  aged 17 and the other 20, both from San Gwann, were charged with the robbery in Misrah Lewza in San Gwann on Sunday.

The teenager was further charged with breaching the conditions of two previous releases and breaching the bail conditions over another criminal case. His request for bail was turned down and he was remanded in custody.

Lawyer Marion Camilleri appeared for the accused.

The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him and was placed on probation for three years.

However, Magistrate Ian Farrugia gave him a stern warning that if he committed another crime within these three years, he would appear before him and he would have no option but to jail him for "five or six years".

Lawyer Carina Nagiah represented the man.

Police Inspector Saviour Baldacchino prosecuted.
