The importation of bees from the south of Italy and Sicily has been banned after a beetle attack in these areas.

The ban was imposed by the Maltese Plant Health Directorate because of the presence of the Small Hive Beetle, which “poses a serious threat” to bees, in the regions of Reggio Calabria and Siracusa.

The beetle uses cracks and crevices in the hive to lay eggs, which then hatch into larvae that feed on pollen and honey, causing extensive damage to the comb and brood.

Beekeepers must immediately report any sighting of this listed pest to the Veterinary and Phytosanitary Regulation Department on 2292 5000 or 8007 2310.

In the meantime, they should also avoid importing bee equipment from the affected regions because it is difficult to detect the insect in these items.

This risk also extends to products such as beeswax and bulk honey: purchasers must clarify the origins of these products.
