Energy minister Konrad Mizzi said today that the government had done the responsible choice when it took up the investment opportunity presented by Shanghai Electric and worked with it for Malta to have security of supply, even if the original power station deadlines were missed.

He said the milestones for the building of the new power station would be announced in the coming days.

He admitted for the first time that the government has changed its plan on its energy pledge to finance the reduction in tariffs through contributions by the investors in the gas power station.

The funding will be spread over seven years.

Insisting that he never said he would resign if the power plant was not delivered on time he said that he was ready to shoulder political responsibility and face the political flack over the change of plans.

The minister made his comments during a tour of Playmobil, where he was told by company officials that the 25% reduction in tariffs from March would save the company €900,000 annually.
