England dominated a typically passionate Auld Enemy friendly to beat Scotland 3-1 with Wayne Rooney scoring twice after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the visitors a half-time lead at Celtic Park last night.

Elsewhere, Toni Kroos struck with a fierce long-range shot a minute from time to give Germany a 1-0 victory over Spain in Vigo while Brazil chalked up their sixth straight win, all in friendlies, since the World Cup when they beat Austria 2-1 in Vienna.

England led 2-0 with seven minutes to play but Scotland came back into the match when Andrew Robertson planted a left-foot shot past Fraser Forster to make it 2-1.

But two minutes later Rooney scored his second of the night and his 46th for England on his 101st appearance to move within three goals of Bobby Charlton’s England record of 49 goals.

Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring when he glanced home a header from a superb pass by his Arsenal team-mate Jack Wilshere to score after 32 minutes, reward for England taking control after a frenetic opening to the game.

Rooney headed England 2-0 ahead in the 47th minute after Scotland had failed to clear a free-kick.

The home side pulled one back when Robertson beat Forster at his near post before Rooney wrapped up the victory by thumping the ball home after a good build-up down the right.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi’ got top billing at a packed Old Trafford but it was a lesser light who scored as Portugal scraped a 1-0 win over Argentina.

Raphael Guerreiro headed the winner in added time after a second half riddled with substitutions and missing the excitement factor provided by the game’s two biggest players who did not reappear after half-time.

Kroos’s well-struck effort settled a match played in lashing rain that was short on genuine chances although Spain goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, who came off the bench to make his debut, will be furious he let the ball past him after getting into position to palm it away.

Germany forward Mario Goetze, who scored the winning goal against Argentina in July’s World Cup final, had gone closest to breaking the deadlock but veteran Iker Casillas saved his effort.

Beating the 2010 World Cup winners and 2012 European champions was a fitting way for Germany to end a stellar year during which they claimed their fourth World Cup crown.

Spain, who beat Germany 1-0 in the semi-finals in South Africa four years ago in their previous meeting, will now have to pick themselves up and continue the rebuilding process after their failed title defence in Brazil.

A stunning late strike by Roberto Firmino, his first for his country, won the match for Brazil, although Austria were the more enterprising team and could easily have gone in with a half-time lead.

Austria, previously unbeaten this year, at least had the consolation of being the first team to score against Brazil since Dunga replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari as coach following their woeful World Cup performance in July.

Aleksandar Dragovic converted a penalty in the 75th minute, ending Brazil’s run of five successive clean sheets, to cancel out David Luiz’s header just after the hour.

Okaka winner

Stefano Okaka scored a late goal on his debut to give Italy a 1-0 win over Albania in Genoa as the Azzurri remained unbeaten in six games since the World Cup.

Italy broke through in the 82nd minute when the 25-year-old Sampdoria forward, who came on as a second-half substitute, met Giacomo Bonaventura’s corner with a glancing header which took a deflection off Hamdi Salihi into the goal.

Italy fielded an experimental team with goalkeeper Mattia Perin also making his debut when he came on in the second half.

In an emotional twist to the game, Sassuolo defender Fran-cesco Acerbi came on in the 81st minute to make his international debut one year after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Acerbi had a tumour removed but the problem was found to have returned when he failed a doping test following a match at the start of December. After further treatment, he returned to Serie A action one month ago.

Meanwhile, Russia won for the first time in four matches, beating Hungary 2-1 to relieve the pressure on under-fire coach Fabio Capello.

Media reports said the Italian could be sacked after the game in Budapest but his side triumphed thanks to second-half goals from Sergei Ignashevich and Alexander Kerzhakov.

Hungary replied through Ne-manja Nikolic late on.
