Court experts are analysing a laptop computer found when Mafia boss Sebastiano Brunno was arrested last month to see whether it was used for any crime while in Malta, a magistrate was told yesterday.

Defence lawyer Roberto Montalto said the computer was among a number of items seized including documents and keys to an apartment he was renting in Buġibba. He asked what the prosecution was planning to do with them as they were never exhibited in court.

Mr Brunno was arrested in Buġibba on October 2, five years after the Sicilian police mounted an extensive manhunt for him. He is known as the head of the Nardo Cosca, a branch of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.

Deputy Attorney General Donatella Frendo Dimech said the laptop was being analysed as part of a magisterial inquiry by Magistrate Francesco Depasquale.

“There is no plan to use the findings for the extradition proceedings but they are analysing its contents to see whether there is anything related to the time when [Mr] Brunno was in Malta,” Dr Frendo Dimech said.

The case continues on Friday when Mr Brunno’s Italian defence lawyer, Francesco Passanisi, is expected to testify on the cases his client had in a Catania court.

The parties are also expected to make their final submissions before a decision on whether Mr Brunno is to be extradited is taken.
