The government is to encourage waste recycling by introducing vouchers for those who collect and deposit plastic and aluminium items, the finance minister said this evening.

He said the system will be operated by the private sector (such as supermarkets).
In another environmental initiative he said the private sector would be invited to manage green belts which may be formed in currently abandoned areas.

A pilot project will be carried out in one locality for people to allocate a rubbish bag for the collection of organic waste, in the same way as is currently being done for the collection of paper.

FLOOR TO AREA RATIO

Furthermore, he said, those who applied for building permits in terms of the floor to area ratio (such as for high rise buildings) would be asked to make a contribution which would go for the Culture Fund.
