The first group of up to 50 teachers will be able to go on a year-long sabbatical as from next year, in line with a Labour electoral commitment, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna announced in the Budget speech.

He said the sabbatical would be granted under precise conditions, of which the most important was that the teachers would during that year have to be doing an activity related to their work or following a full time course for career development.

The minister also announced that VAT on ebooks is to be reduced from the current 18% to 5%.
