In Malta, locksmiths (key cutters) are not registered in any way and this means anybody can trade as a locksmith without a licence, irrespective of competence or background.

With today’s wave of thefts, it is about time that action is taken by the police or a government-appointed authority to remedy the situation.

A locksmith must have an official register containing information, such as the name of the person owning the key, ID card number, type of key, an address and, in the case of vehicles, the name of the owner, car model and registration number and the number of keys cut.

Although the registration of key cutters will not discourage professional thieves, it could certainly minimise thefts in Malta.

To become a licensed locksmith, there needs to be certain criteria which will need to be adhered to. A government authority will need to regulate this sector and key cutters must strictly observe the regulations laid down by this authority.
