Meulensteen: Philadelphia Union made another off-season move yesterday by appointing former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen as a consultant, the Major League Soccer (MLS) team announced. A week after installing Jim Curtin as their head coach, the Union recruited Dutchman Meulensteen, the former manager of Fulham who has spent a total of 12 seasons as an assistant with Manchester United.

Suarez: Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has been released by Uruguay following the midweek friendly international against Costa Rica and will return to Spain. Head coach Oscar Tabarez agreed to let Suarez go back to the his club ahead of his country’s friendly with Chile next Tuesday as he looks at other options within his squad, knowing he will be without the former Liverpool forward during the Copa America next summer.

De Gea: Spain goalkeeper David de Gea missed last night’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Belarus after injuring a finger in training, said national team doctor Oscar Celada. “He will definitely not be ready to play,” Celada told Marca before kick-off referring to the Manchester United shot-stopper. De Gea was injured making a save from striker Paco Alcacer.

Advocaat: Dutchman Dick Advocaat has stepped down as Serbia coach after a 3-1 home defeat by Denmark in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Advocaat said: “The pressure which was everywhere to be seen was too much to bear by this team and I had never faced such a difficult situation in my entire career. Serbia have to move on immediately and find a better way and I thank the FSS for their support throughout.”

Sanchez: Alexis Sanchez tormented Venezuela’s defence and opened the scoring with a header as Chile romped to a 5-0 home victory on Friday. Sanchez, in great form with Arsenal in England, broke the deadlock in the 17th minute and almost scored a spectacular goal from a corner later during the first half.
