A long overdue clean-up of Lower Fort St Elmo was started today by the Cleansing Directorate within the Infrastructure Ministry and the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation.

Most of the debris consists of materials left over by carnival float makers, who used the site for many years.

It is estimated that some 90 tons of waste will be removed.

The area was once used as an Officers’ Quarters by the British services. It was also the site for the filming of Midnight Express, where it served as a Turkish prison.

The corporation recently completed the restoration of Upper Fort St Elmo but no decision has been taken yet on the lower part, overlooking Marsamxett, which requires considerably more restoration work.
