The latest addition of wine-making vessels ‘rolled’ into the Delicata winery recently in the shape of 24, 225-litre new oak barrels. Within days of arrival they have already been topped up with 2014 vintage Syrah and Merlot wines that will eventually, after maturation, be bottled as the company’s flagship wine, Gran Cavalier.

The majority of this latest batch of barrels is from French oak and will be used predominantly for ageing red wine, although some are specifically for white wine fermentation and maturation purposes. Each barrel is equivalent to 300 x 75cl bottles and is made from oak coming from differing French forests with each individual barrel having various degrees of ‘toasting’.

One of the first people to taste the wines, literally within a few days, was Josef Bonello – the presenter of One TV’s wine programme Bin 61 – who was at the winery to interview gold medal-winning winemaker Matthew Delicata on his recent successes.

Delicata has won 10 awards this year, including two gold medals won last month at an international wine competition held in Bergamo, Italy.
