The European Parliament Information Office in Malta, in collaboration with Euro Media Forum and AEDE Malta, is organising Lux Film Days 2014, a three-day film festival at St James Cavalier, Valletta.

The festival will screen the three finalist films in the run for the European Parliament Lux Prize Competition 2014 today, on Friday and Sunday at St James and on December 12 and 14 at the Don Bosco Oratory in Victoria.

The three films, which will be shown with English subtitles, portray diverse contemporary European social issues with a special focus on youth.

The public is invited to attend and participate by casting their vote for their favourite film. Entrance is free of charge.

The three finalist films are:

Razredni sovražnik (12) (Class Enemy) by Rok Bicek, Slovenia: Due to a huge difference in the way they perceive life, the relationship between students and their new German language teacher becomes critically tense. When one of the students commits suicide, her classmates accuse the teacher of being responsible for her death. The realisation that things are not so black and white comes too late.

Bande de filles (12A) (Girlhood) by Céline Sciamma, France: Oppressed by her family setting, dead-end school prospects and the boys’ law in the neighbourhood, a girl starts a new life after meeting a free-spirited trio. She changes her name, her dress code and quits school to be accepted in the gang, hoping this will be a way to freedom.

Ida (12A) by Paweł Pawlikowski, Poland and Denmark: In 1962 Poland, Anna is a novice who was brought up by nuns in a convent. She has to see Wanda, the only living relative, before she takes her vows. Wanda tells Anna that she is Jewish. Both women start a journey not only to find their family tragic story, but who they really are and where they belong. They question their religions and ideas they believed in.
