Marsa CC probably played their last match against touring sides this season on Saturday after facing Pontefract New College in the second match of the two-game series.

The host team, winners of the opening match the week before, batted first in the 20-over game.

John Grima was solid in his batting and made 21 runs. His opening partner, Andy Naudi, was on shaky grounds though. He was lucky to chalk up a single after being dropped only to be caught in the next over ending up with three runs.

Tony Slater left his best innings for last, making a personal best this year of 16 runs hitting the boundary twice along the way.

The innings of the day came from the bat of Justin Brooke who made an attacking 55 which included seven boundaries.

Sarfraz Ali made 11 runs and Sid Anand three as Marsa totalled 128 runs (including extras) from their allotted overs.

For Pontefract, Matty Smith, Elliot Spears, Matty Green and Connor Fisher all took a wicket.

Spears (23 runs) and Matty Green (14) opened the visitors’ innings, producing a reasonable start to the run chase.

However, Mark Smith and Danny Mills hardly troubled the scorer, making three runs between them. Connor Fisher (29) and Andy Green (25) gave their all and had the Marsa team worried.

It wasn’t until they were both out that the home side started breathing more comfortably.

Daniel Bailey, Aaron Lunn and Joel Moore put on four runs between them and the visitors fell short by 11 runs after the 20 overs were bowled.

For Marsa, it was encouraging to see young Waleet Ahmed taking two wickets as did Brooke.

Another junior, Ali Hamsa, took a wicket as did Sarfraz Ali.

Marsa won the series 2-0.
