Tonio Fenech recently lamented the fact that the system of calculating the eco-reduction for electricity bills over periods of about two months may result in some consumers losing this benefit.

During the period October 1, 2008 to August 26, 2009 (330 days) my electricity consumption was 2,908 units, based on two consecutive bills or an average of 8.81units daily.

This works out to an annual consumption of 3,216 units. A two-person household consuming less than 3,500 units is entitled to a full year’s eco-reduction.

However, the then Water Services Corporation used only the second bill, from March 23 to August 26, 2009 (156 days ) to work out the annual consumption.

Because of the use of air conditioning ,during the summer months, the average daily consumption for this period was 9.79 units. Using this inflated figure it came to 3,573 units in 365 days. Since this exceeds 3,500 units, I was deprived of the reduction for this period.

I wrote two letters to then Water Services Corporation complaining that since this was supposed to be worked out over a 12-month period, it was wrong and illogical for someone to receive this benefit for only half a year. It should be either all or nothing.

I received an acknowledgement after the first letter but nothing after that. A number of telephone calls proved futile because all I was told was that this was the way they were told to work it out and could do nothing about it.

Fenech ought to stop whining about something that his government was also guilty of doing.
