InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will roll out an environmental tool allowing it to track its energy and water use across its more than 4,700 hotels worldwide from January 1.
The group, which runs one hotel on the island in Paceville, St Julian’s, says its online Green Engage programme allows users to assess their waste management and carbon use to see how much they are spending and saving.
It comprises more than 200 specific actions designed to reduce environmental impact, with IHG’s managed hotels avoiding $73 million in energy costs alone in 2013.
IHG will help hotels not currently registered to sign up and reach IHG Green Engage Level 1 certification by the end of next year.
This will include satisfying 10 actions such as training colleagues, tracking utility data, managing the use of non-essential lighting and implementing best practice in areas such as housekeeping and laundry.
