World Diabetes Day is celebrated around the world on November 14 to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.

The Maltese Diabetes Association will join 200 other member associations from around the world to celebrate this date and to raise awareness on the condition and its complications.

The association’s main event will be an opportunity for the public to learn more about diabetes, how to prevent it and the complications of this long-term chronic condition.

The public will also be encouraged to take the first step and get tested for free.

The event will take place on November 15 from 9am to 1pm at The Point shopping complex, Tigné.

There will be free blood glucose monitoring, a diabetes education corner with free discussions by experts at Pjazza Tigné on health eating by dietician Joe Sammut, on prevention and complications by diabetes and endocrinology specialist Rachel Agius and on dental hygiene by dental hygienist Veronica Montebello. Discussions will be facilitated by John Bundy.

On November 16, the association will be organising a fundraising Sunday buffet lunch for the family. Details and application may be found at www.diabetesmalta.org.
