Flowers were laid at sea today to mark the 66th anniversary since 23 people drowned when a luzzu capsized in rough seas off Hondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo.

Only four passengers survived in what to date in the biggest post-war tragedy in Gozo on October 30, 1948.

Mass was said on a Gozo ferry this morning before flowers were thrown into the sea by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo and relatives of the victims, among others.

The luzzu had survived the rough sea crossing from Malta and, according to reports, the master had wanted to put into Hondoq Bay, but some of the passengers insisted they wanted to be taken to Mgarr.

The luzzu capsized in the final part of its trip, the short distance from Hondoq Bay to Mgarr.

Those on board the luzzu included two policemen, a woman and two crewmen.
