Despite a contract signed 12 years ago with the then government and countless reminders and flowery promises in the press made by GAP Holdings since, the Fort Cambridge Officers Quarters continue to rot.

Countless mysterious fires and a general lack of maintenance have made it a haven for vermin of all kinds. The place is falling apart. What are the developers waiting for to start the long-promised renovation?

It is to be hoped that they will not attempt to turn what was once a very smart military building and one of Sliema’s few historical sites into another skyscraper with hundreds of unsold flats further marring the landscape. Will Mepa put its foot down? Will the Sliema council wake up from its slumber and protest on our behalf? Will the government insist that the contract made years ago be honoured?
