The Home-Start community service in Gozo is in need of volunteers to visit families. A campaign is currently under way to recruit more parent volunteers, said Nancy Portelli, organiser of the service, at a seminar.

Portelli gave an overview of how the service is provided and how families can benefit from it.

The service has been run in Gozo since 2012 from Dar Ġużeppa Debono in Għajnsielem in agreement with the Gozo Ministry and Aġenzija Appoġġ.

Family coach and consultant Julian Xuereb spoke on ‘Core temperament essentials’. He said parents can relate better with their children by understanding their temperament traits. By understanding these temperaments, parents can help their children deal better with others and adapt to their surroundings.

Home-Start Malta chairperson Catherine Fleri Soler said that due to its simple and friendly methods, Home-Start can fit into any community and culture. In fact, the service is found in over 22 countries around the world.

Home-Start Gozo committee chairperson John Edwards spoke about his experience as a volunteer for Home-Start in the UK, where he supported fathers facing difficulties during child rearing.

Gozo Minister Anton Refalo, who opened the seminar, spoke of the value of the service for families in challenging situations.
