Q: I recently bought an electric kettle which, according to what is prominently printed on its box, carries a five-year commercial guarantee.

However, the seller gave me a different guarantee, which is limited to two years. Is the seller allowed to reduce the duration of the guarantee offered by the manufacturer?

A: If the seller is the person responsible for the commercial guarantee, then he may issue his own guarantee and legally he may only be held responsible for the guarantee he has issued.

Furthermore, as a consumer, you should be aware that besides the commercial guarantee, there is also the legal guarantee that gives you the right to claim a remedy if the product purchased results faulty or does not conform to the contract of sale.

The legal guarantee is valid for two years from the date the product purchased is delivered to the consumer.
