Good manners are essential in all aspects of life. While I was reading the editorial entitled ‘What happened to manners’ (October 28) I recalled the time I was a child in Australia when the local shopkeeper used to always remind us children to say our please and thank yous.

I must admit that I learned my lesson early and it remained ingrained in me to be well mannered and show respect to others.

Good manners is what makes a person special. It not only makes you feel more confident and raises your self-esteem, there’s more of a chance that others will treat you the same way.

Parents and teachers can contribute most in giving our new generation of children good manners and respect for others because it is difficult to reform a child who has been brought up in an uncultured way.
