The Union Ħaddiema Maghqudin condemned all type of worker exploitation and said the case of Leisure Clothing was one case of precarious employment.

The director of the Chinese state-owned operating at the Bulebel industrial estate has been arrested as part of an investigating into exploitation of workers and human trafficking.

The man, who is Chinese, was arrested on Tuesday and it is understood that the police raided Leisure Clothing in Bulebel to assess conditions.

The factory employs just under 300 Chinese nationals who were allegedly attracted to Malta with a promise of high wages.

The UĦM hoped all unions would condemn the behaviour and that the authorities would take all the necessary steps according to law in this and in other cases of precarious employment.

In another statement, the Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry also welcomed the authorities' actions and maintained that the rights of workers, irrespective of their nationality, had to be safeguarded, in their interest and in the interest of the common good.
