A Spanish student was conditionally discharged by a court this afternoon after he pleaded guilty to smashing a skylight in a block of apartments in St Julians while he was in a drunken state.

Jose Garcia Sorano, 22, entered a block of apartments through the front door he found open, climbed to the roof and smashed the skylight early yesterday morning, the court heard.

The man, who is in Malta to learn English, pleaded guilty and paid, in €50 notes, the almost €2,000 in damage he caused.

The prosecuting officer argued for a suspended jail term because the residents of Sliema, St Julians and Swieqi were suffering as a result of such unruly behaviour by foreigners but the court conditionally discharged him.

Police Inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted while lawyer Anthony Cutajar appeared for the Spaniard.
