Workers will today prepare for the demolition of the Marsa power station’s chimneys and fuel tanks, as parts of the old plant finally start being dismantled.

Belt il-Ħażna Road, Marsa, adjacent to the power station, will be closed between noon and 3pm for safety reasons. Works started last week with the demolition of ventilations shafts.

The corporation kicked off the process for the removal of Marsa power station last week by issuing a call for offers for the demolition of three chimneys and four fuel tanks.

Preparatory work to dismantle turbines and boilers has also started.

In June 2011, British-based engineering consultancy group RVA was tasked with the decommissioning and dismantling of the Marsa power station and putting together a waste management plan.
