A record-breaking August for shuttle traffic helped Channel Tunnel company Eurotunnel to increased revenues over the summer.

Eurotunnel group revenues for July to September totalled €343.9 million: a seven per cent rise on the same period last year.

It carried a record 375,000 vehicles on shuttle trains through the tunnel in August, breaking the daily record three times during the month.

The new daily record is 16,416, with the week of August 11-17 seeing an all-time seven-day high of 85,400 vehicles.

The number of rail freight trains passing through the tunnel rose nine per cent to 681, while the number of passengers carried on high-speed Eurostar trains increased three per cent.
