The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team have won the Constructors’ title with three races to go and with a massive advantage over the rest.

The UK-based team have shown total dominance in a championship that was re-invented with a hybrid system and smaller turbo-assisted engines and a fantastic pair of drivers in Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who pulled out all their resources to beat each other and the competition.

The team had its share of difficulties, with Hamilton suffering most mishaps during qualifying, but the car’s superiority was shown in Sochi when Rosberg clawed his way onto the podium from the end of the field and when Hamilton left the race from the pit lane and finished third.

The final challenge is to see who of the two will be crowned world champion. Hamilton seems to have put his act together and has been on a constant charge taking the lead of the championship, but with points doubled at the last grand prix in Abu Dhabi anything can happen, leaving Rosberg and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo still with a chance. Ricciardo has so far managed three incredible wins.

This week the FIA announced that a special board has been set up to investigate Jules Bianchi’s accident in Suzuka. The board is composed of experts in the sport. One of the panel members is former Ferrari chief Stefano Domenicali, who was recently in Malta to deliver a talk about his experience in Formula 1 to the Malta Group of Professional Engineers Institutions.

Bianchi’s accident has illustrated the dangers that exist in the sport. It was a freak accident but it happened, and one has to consider such consequences when one realises that Bianchi will never recover from the accident.

Bianchi had been handpicked by Domenicali to join the Ferrari Driving Academy. He was set to join Ferrari, but ironically a few days earlier had received another blow as Vettel was replacing Fernando Alonso at Ferrari, sidelining Bianchi.

The next race is in the US, a track that has always offered a spectacle especially at the first corner after the straight.

Will Rosberg chew back part of his disadvantage, or will it be Hamilton dominating again?
