A policeman yesterday had the skin of his hand ripped off as he was bitten by a man stopped for driving dangerously, the police said today.

The man has been arrested.

The police said the man was seen driving dangerously by policemen on patrol at Tigne Seafront. They stopped the man who became aggressive so they asked for back-up.

The man refused to take a breathalyser test and when a female police sergeant instructed him not to drive, he started calling her names and threatening her family.

The man was arrested. When he was taken to a police car, he tried to open the door and kicked the driver and banged his head on the windows. He spat blood at the three policemen and bit one of them tearing the skin on his hand.

Acting police commissioner Ray Zammit said he will not tolerate more violence on police officers on duty.
