Sir Harry Luke – a little-known personality with strong connections to Gozo – was the subject of the first in a new series of free public lectures organised annually by Wirt Għawdex at the Santa Cecilia mediaeval chapel, Għajnsielem.

Paul Pisani spoke about the turbulent times that characterised the tenure of this Lieutenant-Governor of Malta, which included the suspension of the constitution, the language question, local political turmoil and the looming prospects of a world war.

Sir Luke spent as much time as he could in Gozo. He personally spurred the publication of a proper English guidebook on Gozo and the translation of De Soldanis’s manuscript on the history of Gozo from Italian into Maltese.
